GM’s Observations
- Ok, I’m finding that I simply don’t have enough time to write-up the full sessions anymore. We’re playing probably one week in two, sometimes more often than that, and it takes me two evenings to do the writeup. Also, the sessions are longer than they used to be because when I was living in Perth, there was a 2 hour timezone difference between us which gave us up to 2 hours of playing time. Now we’re in the same timezone, sessions can be longer which means the writeups are taking longer. I just don’t have the time so I’m going to change to an abridged writeup. Hopefully this format works for you (the readers).
- Barsaive is part of the Earthdawn setting but it’s a setting that I know precious little about. David GMed this one, and I must admit that I was very tired so a lot of the meticulous detail was lost on me. The important point is that is has a very difficult way of employing magic, and that stories/deeds are very important as they can improve the quality of things as the thread within them develops. Ethan had visited this realm before (in Session 69).
Major Characters
- Ethan, Isabelle
Adversaries
- Undead sky pirates, an undead aberration, and a Barsaive sorcerer who is being mind-controlled by one of the Horrors.
Adventure Hook
- None. In media res.
Adventure Summary
- Ethan is taking a short flight on a sky ship in order to see more of the Barsaive realm when it comes under attack by undead sky pirates. Ethan is very effective in helping to drive them off and destroying the enemy vessel. There is concern as to where this sky ship came from as the ship’s markings are that of a troll village and the trolls are known to be peaceful.
- Ethan makes his way to Kratis, the so-called city of thieves, famous for its threaded merchandise. (Perhaps Ethan is interested in this because of his stash of bloodstones which can be used to store magical energies). He meets Isabelle at the city - they are old friends, occasionally lovers but not recently. They go exploring together and Isabelle finds all sorts of knick-knacks, pointing out the ones that most valuable or interesting (here power equates to the threads within the item which is derived by the stories/deeds that the item has performed). They have a jolly time until there is a petrified scream nearby. A humanoid monster which seems to be made up of many creatures, dripping goo, is in the process of attacking the market. Ethan destroys it (very messily) and then tracks it back to the sewers to a summoning circle. To his surprise, he is rewarded for dealing with the monster. He takes a bath to clean himself up and finds that his room has been upgraded.
- Overnight, a child comes to see Ethan and asks for his help. His mother is being threatened. Ethan follows and finds more corpses and the sorcerer appears to the child’s father. Ethan deals with the sorcerer, knocking him out - but when he realises that the sorcerer could be under the influence of a Horror, Ethan takes him onto the Stair which breaks the Horror’s link to the sorcerer, breaking the spell.
- Ethan heads back to bed, the adventure over. He talks the next day with the sorcerer to find out how he came in contact with the sorcerer.
Other Impacts
- None really. We’ve established Barsaive as a place that Ethan may return to, and Ethan has a continued friendship with Isabelle.
… and that’s where we ended the session. I hope this abridged format works.
